It's Time for an Integrated Proposal

Two ideas for revitalizing Market Street have been bouncing around for quite some time:  the first goes into effect today, the second is a ballot proposal.  Starting today, eastbound vehicles driving on Market Street towards the Embarcadero will be encouraged to turn right on 10th Street.  If they don't turn there, they will be required to exit Market on 8th Street.  The idea is to reduce congestion and make Market Street more pedestrian friendly and less congested.

The second is to allow billboards and signs on Market between Fifth and Seventh street.  The supporters of this proposal say that increased signage to this area will encourage pedestrians to frequent these businesses and fuel economic growth and the vitality of the mid-Market area.  The arguments against this proposal claim that this plan will actually promote blight.  Me?  I can't imagine how big billboards and digital signs will enhance the area.  Clean streets, businesses that create value and good street lights are likely to have the most benefit for the city.
